Hearing voices is more common than people think; it is in fact a normal but unusual experience. However, it can be a frightening experience for both the hearer and family and friends who support them.
It is estimated that between 3-5% of the NZ population hear voices, yet less than 1% are ever diagnosed with an illness. Hearing Voices Network Aotearoa NZ provides support and information to people who hear voices. Their website has a dedicated page which offers advice for whanau, friends and caregivers of voice hears, as well as links to personal stories, complementary therapies, books, other helpful websites, and available support groups.
You can also download helpful pamphlets and information sheets at the Hearing Voices website.
