A Guide For Carers

A Government Resource

Every family carer should read the Government’s Guide for Carers

It outlines the help available from many government agencies for those supporting a family member or friend who is sick, disabled, or requires other needs.

To request your free print copy of the Guide, phone Carers NZ 0800 777 797 or email centre@carers.net.nz

The resource includes information about government funded services and supports available for carers such as financial help, needs assessments and service coordination (NASC), help at home, respite, help related to children with special education needs, making and resolving complaints, equipment and modifications, and more.

To access some of the supports mentioned in the booklet, such as the Carer Support Subsidy, having breaks, home help, or housing modifications, a formal needs assessment will be organised.

Your Doctor or GP can refer the person you support for a needs assessment (GP fees will apply), or you can talk to your local NASC service directly. Click here to find contact details for your nearest needs assessor. Or click here to find your local needs assessor if the person you are caring for is over the age of 65.
