Research: Māori Grandparents 2012
Tupuna – Nga Kaitiaki Mokopuna: A resource for Māori grandparents is the outcome of qualitative research led by Dr Cherryl Waerea-i-te-rangi Smith, Ngati Apa, Kahungunu, Te Aitanga a Hauiti, Ngai Tau who is co-director of Te Atawhai o te Ao: Independent Māori Research Institute for Environment and Health, based in Whanganui.
Families Commission Chief Māori Advisor, Dr Kathie Irwin, says many Māori grandparents have both dependent children and grandchildren, as well as providing care for elderly whānau, which can result in multiple demands on their time.
